नौसेना दिवस 4 दिसंबर, 1971 की रात को लॉन्च हुए ‘ऑपरेशन ट्राइडेंट’ की याद में मनाया जाता है। इस ऑपरेशन में कराची हार्बर को पूरी तरह तबाह कर दिया गया था। इस ऑपरेशन से पाकिस्तानी नौसेना को भारी नुकसान पहुंचा था और वह किसी भारतीय नौसेना बेस पर हमला करने की क्षमता खो बैठी थी। इस ऑपरेशन में भारतीय नौसेना ने पहली बार एंटी-शिप मिसाइल्स का इस्तेमाल किया था। इस ऑपरेशन के तुरंत बाद ऑपरेशन पॉयथन लॉन्च कर दिया गया, जिससे पाकिस्तानी नौसेना की कमर तोड़ दी गई।
