‘वाराणसी का दम घुंट रहा है’-‘सेंटर फार एनवायर्नमेंट एंड एनर्जी डेवलपमेंट’(सीईईडी) ‘इंडियास्पेंड’ और ‘केयर4एयर’ द्वारा पेश की गई इस रिपोर्ट के अनुसार यहां पर्टीकुलेट मैटर यानी पीएम 2.5 का राष्ट्रीय सुरक्षित मानक 60μg / घन मीटर, या घन मीटर प्रति माइक्रोग्राम का इस्तेमाल किया गया है। यह स्तर विश्व स्वास्थ्य संगठन (डब्ल्यूएचओ) के मानक की तुलना में ढाई गुना लचीला है। पीएम 2.5 के लिए डब्लूएओ का 24 घंटे का औसत मानक 25μg / घन मीटर है।
वायु गुणवत्ता पर निगरानी रखने के लिए इंडियास्पेंड ने अब तक देश भर के 16 शहरों में #Breathe वायु गुणवत्ता सेंसर लगाए हैं। सिर्फ उत्तर प्रदेश में 25 निगरानी स्टेशन हैं। नवंबर 2016 के बाद से आगरा, लखनऊ, कानपुर, इलाहाबाद और वाराणसी में वायु की गुणवत्ता ‘बहुत खराब’ से ‘गंभीर रूप से खतरनाक’ के बीच दर्ज की गई है। ऐसी हवा में सांस लेना हमारे शरीर और स्वास्थ्य के लिए बहुत ही हानिकारक है।
